The brief

Gym construction and fit-out in ground floor shell unit of a residential block

Year of completion:

12 weeks

Psycle is a premium boutique fitness brand offering immersive class-based workouts across London. With 4 distinct concepts and a highly energised experience Psycle runs studio session all day every day from 6:30am to 7:30pm.

The studio experience is sound tracked by a live-DJ creating a nightclub atmosphere, and a micro phoned instructor drives the pace and energy of each and every class. The class capacity is approximately 60 participants per 45-minute session.

The standard construction methods for acoustic control were inadequate in this scenario as noise breakout and vibration would have penetrated the residential apartments above the unit.

DDI Projects assembled a team of acoustic specialists to innovate a solution to achieve zero noise and vibration breakout.

The new studio space immerses club members in the energy of the room through lighting effects, colour-schemes and dual-sound systems; with distinct sets of speakers dedicated to the music and to the instructor vocal for cyrstal clarity.

Design Challenges

We needed to design an acoustic environment that maximised the entertainment in the studio as well as ensuring high volumes of music, vocals and vibration could be adequately contained by the building.

The site had the added complication of being on the ground floor of a glass-fronted residential building formed of concrete and brick, divided into flats.

Essentially, there were 3 key challenges:

  • Acoustic integrity

  • Reverberation control

  • Background noise and cross talk control

Heaven in a box

We constructed a bespoke 'box in a box' within a steel frame to totally isolate the studio from the surrounding building structure.

Every element of the construction was considered and tested against our 3 design principles; from the flooring and walls braces, fabric and materials, to the surface treatments, finishes and building services plant and systems.

Comprehensive testing was undertaken to assess the building's ability to contain noise and vibration.

The solution resulted in ZERO noise and vibration leakage.

In contrast to the high octane spin studios, the locker rooms, reception and street-level bar and retail zones are paired back, light-filled spaces with a fresh colour palette.

"The DDI team were able to review all the plans and understand complex acoustic requirements as well as sensitive weight loadings required from the fit-out... and where cost savings could be made...

I have and will recommend the DDI team going forward."
